Information technology skills enable an individual to use computers, software applications, databases, and other technologies to achieve a wide variety of academic, work-related, and personal goals. Information literate individuals necessarily develop some technology skills.

Information Literacy and Higher Education

Developing lifelong learners is central to the mission of higher education institutions. By ensuring that individuals have the intellectual abilities of reasoning and critical thinking, and by helping them construct a framework for learning how to learn, colleges and universities provide the foundation for continued growth throughout their careers, as well as in their roles as informed citizens and members of communities. Information literacy is a key component of, and contributor to, lifelong learning. Information literacy competency extends learning beyond formal classroom settings and provides practice with self-directed investigations as individuals move into internships, first professional positions, and increasing responsibilities in all arenas of life. Because information literacy augments students’ competency with evaluating, managing, and using information, it is now considered by several regional and discipline-based accreditation associations as a key outcome for college students.

http://www.ala.org/ala/acrl/acrlstandards/informationliteracycompetency.cfm

Approaches to multicultural education

Five approaches to multicultural education: by Sleeter (1996)

Advocates of the Teaching the Culturally Different approach attempt to raise the academic achievement of students of color through culturally relevant instruction.

In the Human Relations approach students are taught about commonalties of all people through understanding their social and cultural differences but not their differences in institutional and economic power.

The Single Group Studies approach is about the histories and contemporary issues of oppression of people of color, women, low socioeconomic groups, and gays and lesbians.

The Multicultural Education approach promotes the transformation of the educational process to reflect the ideals of democracy in a pluralistic society. There are three principal families of theories about learning:

Theory of Behaviorism emphasizes observable behavior, rather than inner mental experiences. Behaviorism is also thought of in terms of association building, and the “drill and practice” software often used in skill-building is an example of behavioristic instructional technology design.

Theory of Cognitivism emphasizes the importance of perception, learning, and thought as bases for understanding human behavior and learning. Cognitivistic instructional design is characterized by analytic breakdown of a topic or subject matter, and the transformation of the subject matter into a set of structured cognitive tasks. Papert’s LOGO-based learning tools are considered cognitivistic.

Theory of constructivism is seen as a process of knowledge construction where the learner is in charge of his or her own learning experience. Experience, combined with reflection and social interaction, allows the learner to build on prior knowledge and create their own understanding of ideas and concepts. An example of a constructivist learning environment online is a Web-Quest, an inquiry based activity where the information used by learners is drawn from the Web.

Taxonomic Analysis of Learning Behaviors

Bloom's Taxonomy of Learning - In 1956 Bloom and his colleagues began development of a taxonomy in the cognitive, attitudinal (affective) and psychomotor domains. His comment is a great place to begin thinking about
What it means to be Persistent. According to Art Costa and Bena Kallick, persisting is one of the Habits of Mind associated with intelligent behavior. For many students, however, when teachers, parents or other adults encourage them to be persistent it feels as if they are being asked to be insane. After all, from the student’s perspective, if the only strategy, theory, or tactic in her repertoire didn’t work, it really doesn’t make sense to just keep trying harder. For many, “just trying harder” can lead to repeated failure and frustration. So the question for those teaching Habits of Mind might be: “How can we help students, parents, administrators, and teachers develop a more useful understanding of what it really means to be Persistent?” by Rob Bocchino

The model consist on the basis of triangular conceptions:

<img style="margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px; Three Models of Distance Education are as following:
Descriptions - Model A - Distributed Classroom
Interactive telecommunications technologies extend a classroom- based course from one location to a group of students at one or more other locations; the typical result is an extended "section" that mixes on-site and distant students. The faculty and institution control the pace and place of instruction
Descriptions - Model B - Independent Learning
This model frees students from having to be in a particular place at a particular time. Students provided with a variety of materials, including a course guide and detailed syllabus, and access to a faculty member who provides guidance, answers questions, and evaluates their work. Contact between the individual student and one or a combination of the following technologies achieves the instructor: telephone, voice-mail, computer conferencing, electronic mail, and regular mail.
Descriptions - Model C - Open Learning + Class
This model involves the use of a printed course guide and other media (such as videotape or computer disk) to allow the individual student to study at his or her own pace, combined with occasional use of interactive telecommunications technologies for group meetings among all enrolled students.

Link to the website is as following; http://www.umuc.edu/ide/modldata.html

Leadership Quotations

My personal Top 10 Leadership Quotations:

1. The most important aspects of Maslow theory were educational goals for students to learn. Another important objective was to learn importance of life, and make use of knowledge purposeful and meaningful to the students so that it can be valuable and useful through their lives.

Maslow’s Hierarchy of motivation is as following:
Level one: Physiological needs such as hunger, thirst, sex, sleep, relaxation and bodily integrity must be satisfied before the next level comes into play.
Level two: Safety needs call for a predictable and orderly world. If these are not satisfied people will look to organize their worlds to provide for the greatest degree of safety and security. If satisfied, people will come under the force of level three.
Level three: Love and belongings needs cause people to seek warm and friendly relationships.
Level four: Self-esteem needs involve the desire for strength, achievement, adequacy, mastery and competence.
