Five approaches to multicultural education: by Sleeter (1996)

Advocates of the Teaching the Culturally Different approach attempt to raise the academic achievement of students of color through culturally relevant instruction.
In the Human Relations approach students are taught about commonalties of all people through understanding their social and cultural differences but not their differences in institutional and economic power.
The Single Group Studies approach is about the histories and contemporary issues of oppression of people of color, women, low socioeconomic groups, and gays and lesbians.
The Multicultural Education approach promotes the transformation of the educational process to reflect the ideals of democracy in a pluralistic society. Students are taught content using instructional methods that value cultural knowledge and differences.

A Look at Past, Present & Future Trends byRobert Whelan

Instructional Technology is the problem analysis, solution design, development, implementation, management, and evaluation of instructional processes and resources to improve learning and performance in education and at work.” (Robert Reiser, 2001). There are three principal families of theories about learning:

Theory of Behaviorism emphasizes observable behavior, rather than inner mental experiences. Behaviorism is also thought of in terms of association building, and the “drill and practice” software often used in skill-building is an example of behavioristic instructional technology design.

Theory of Cognitivism emphasizes the importance of perception, learning, and thought as bases for understanding human behavior and learning. Cognitivistic instructional design is characterized by analytic breakdown of a topic or subject matter, and the transformation of the subject matter into a set of structured cognitive tasks. Papert’s LOGO-based learning tools are considered cognitivistic.

Theory of constructivism is seen as a process of knowledge construction where the learner is in charge of his or her own learning experience. Experience, combined with reflection and social interaction, allows the learner to build on prior knowledge and create their own understanding of ideas and concepts. An example of a constructivist learning environment online is a Web-Quest, an inquiry based activity where the information used by learners is drawn from the Web.

1. Descriptions - Model A - Distributed Classroom

2. Descriptions - Model B - Independent Learning
This model frees students from having to be in a particular place at a particular time. Contact between the individual student and one or a combination of the following technologies achieves the instructor: telephone, voice-mail, computer conferencing, electronic mail, and regular mail.

This model involves the use of a printed course guide and other media (such as videotape or computer disk) to allow the individual student to study at his or her own pace, combined with occasional use of interactive telecommunications technologies for group meetings among all enrolled students.

What it means to be Persistent. According to Art Costa and Bena Kallick, persisting is one of the Habits of Mind associated with intelligent behavior. For many students, however, when teachers, parents or other adults encourage them to be persistent it feels as if they are being asked to be insane. After all, from the student’s perspective, if the only strategy, theory, or tactic in her repertoire didn’t work, it really doesn’t make sense to just keep trying harder.
